Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a discrete medical speciality that concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to altered mechanics, function and posture. A detailed knowledge and understanding of the structure and the function of the human musculoskeletal system enables an osteopath to identify faults that occur because of injury or mechanical stress and to treat not just the symptoms but the underlying causes of the problem. This allows the body to restore itself to normal function.
The term osteopath is legally protected, like doctor and dentist, and registration by the General Osteopathic Council is awarded to those osteopaths who meet strict guidelines and criteria.
Philippa Last is a graduate of the British School of Osteopathy in London. After successfully completing the four-year course she worked for five years in two well-established London practices. She returned to Rutland in January 2003 and set up her practice at The Uppingham Surgery, London Road. She has a broad range of interests including the treatment of work-related disorders and pregnancy related back pain. She has extensive diagnostic and technical skills and uses a wide range of treatment approaches including joint manipulation, articulation, deep soft tissue massage and muscle release work. Where appropriate, she also uses cranial osteopathic techniques. These are particularly useful for the treatment of new babies who are unsettled after birth or who develop digestive discomfort or colic.
The British School of Osteopathy retains links with Philippa as she is a clinic tutor at the School two days a week, delivery tutorials and supervising third and fourth year undergraduates whilst they assess and treat patients.
Philippa is registered with the General Osteopathic Council and is a member of the British Osteopathic Association. Philippa Last is recognised by all of the major insurance companies including BUPA and PPP
